Rates of growth/reducing of the population size of ukrainian cities for 2002-2014

The map "Growth Rates / Reducing the Population Size of Ukrainian Cities for 2002-2014" reports the general trends in the dynamics of the demographic situation regarding the urban population of Ukraine (figure 1).

Map of dynamics of population size of ukrainian cities

Figure 1. The map of dynamics of the population size of ukrainian cities

The map is compiled based on the results of the processing of data from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine. Selected 369 most indicative settlements, among which: 47 large, 248 peripheral-agrarian and 74 peripheral industrial cities.

A brief analysis of the content of the map, conclusions that can be made on the map

The percentage of population increase or decrease in the urban context indicates the demographic changes of the urban population. One can see that the largest decrease in the population occurred in large industrial centers, especially in Donetsk, as well as in Luhansk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovograd, Cherkasy, and Crimea. This can be linked to the unstable economic situation in the country. Relatively small positive dynamics are shown by Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytsky, Ternopil and Chernivtsi regions. This is due to the relatively high birth rates in these regions. Negative dynamics in cities in the western border areas is connected with the outflow of their inhabitants through emigration.

Technological scheme of map manufacturing

Creating a map involves several technological steps.

  1. Development of the concept of the map. The best reduction and growth of the population is to pass relative indicators, because absolute values ??of population dynamics are perceived vague. The mapping factor should be symmetric to convey the general trend of population dynamics. Additional informative maps provide differentiation of cities by population (3 graduations - large, medium, small).

  2. Geocoding (+ verification) of the cities for which the statistics are received. As a result of this operation, statistics are combined (population in cities) and geospatial data (localization of cities).

  3. The choice of symbols, means and methods of the image. A traditional localized circular icon is traditional for transmitting localization and one indicator for settlements. Its size is compared with the population of Ukrainian cities, and the percentage of its growth / decrease is given in color to the associations. The growth of the population of the city logically reflects the green, the opposite of demographic dynamics - a red, steady trend - yellow.

  4. Transfer of the load from the QGIS geoinformation system to the InkSkape vector graphic editor. The last thematic load was imposed on the cartographic basis of the territory of Ukraine with a base scale of 1:6 000 000.

Ways to obtain the map

The map can be used to reflect the demographic situation in Ukraine, identify demographic problems in the regions, assess the dynamics of the urban population. In a way, the map can illustrate the economic situation in Ukraine and change its role in the global division of labor.

The authors of the collection of scientific works "Cartography Template" can use the concept of the map on a free basis. Its cost is included in the publication fee.

On the other hand, if necessary, we can refine the map so that it more accurately reflects the results of your research. To do this, you must contact the editorial office.
