The author examines the principles a city urban system is based on (dissipativity, temporarity, emergence etc.). Formation of objective image of the Dnipro city is taken as a reference point for the examination. The toponymic analysis is founded on a row of urban maps and based on the concept of space-time sections. The author takes into scrutiny and juxtaposes the notions «toponymic-space», «toponymic field» and «toponymic landscape». The paper also deals with urbanonyms which are regarded to be artefacts, i.e. the phenomena of the spiritual life of a city community which should be perpetuated. The author elaborated a general urban map and a complex of thematic maps presenting urbanonyms of different kinds including religious and industrial ones, as well as foreign-influenced place names and the ones reflecting landscape particularities. The author provides examples for urbanonyms at different stages of their development. At the end of the paper it is outlined a recent research trend concerning the naming principles for ergo-urbanonyms. Keywords: urbanonyms, place names renaming, toponymic city landscape, loss of toponymic information, toponymic persistence, toponymic tourist attractions, urbanonyms as artefacts.
