Cartography in general is facing a tipping point. It is turning from a science with a limited use into a full member of the information society. Knowing the software and the ability to create simple thematic maps with it has become an integral competence of modern specialists in the field of Earth Sciences, along with basic theoretical training in Cartography and Geoinformatics. Modern cartography is integrated with geographical information systems and remote sensing of the Earth and it is in this context we see the prospects of training the specialists in the university. The publication is devoted to analysis of the current state of training of cartographers at the Department of Geodesy and Cartography, Faculty of Geography, of Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University. Attention is paid to the problems that arose after the introduction of a new List of areas that are subject to the training of specialists in higher educational institutions. Every year a growing number of problems is arising in the admission of students on the 1st course and the preparation of new curricula according to the requirements of MES in accordance with the changes in education specified in the new Law on higher education. This publication presents the results of Entrance campaign in 2016. The entrance campaign of 2016 has another divergence from the previous years because only some of higher educational institutions announced openings on separate educational programs, while the majority of schools accepted students on wide specializations, unlike in previous years, when student were accepted on a program ‘Geodesy, cartography and land surveying’.
